Description:

A superbly crafted snuffbox of wood and ivory inlay made from the remnants of York Minster. In the top is inserted a medallett inscribed " YORK MINSTER BURNT BY JONATHAN MARTIN FEB. 2 1829". An obvious period commemorative piece following the spectacular trial of Jonathan Martin, brother of famed painter John Martin. Jonathan Martin torched York Minster in York, England and was tried and sentenced to life at Bedlam where he died at age 56 a maniac. Interestingly, under the lid is a written allegory of the Church and description of the snuff box's origin.
