Description:

A carved stone effigy bowl from the Taino Classic Period (1000 - 1500 A.D.). The Taino were one of the major indigenous peoples of the Caribbean at the time of European contact in the late 15th Century. At that time, Taino tribes were the primary inhabitants of the islands of Cuba, Trinidad, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. The bowl is most likely originally from the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic & Haiti) or possibly Puerto Rico. The bowl measures 3-1/2 inches by 4 inches by 2-1/4 inches tall. The bowl is carved and polished from a heavy, fine-grained, beige stone and incorporates a human face effigy and a band of stylized 'bird-headed' serpents just below the rim. The bowl is in good condition with only one small chip in the rim behind the head. The chip is old enough to be covered by the same age patina as the whole vessel. This lot has a reserve.
