Description:

84-pound Spanish Nuestra Senora De Atocha silver ingot with photo copy of Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Dimensions: 15(L) X 3.15(T) X 4.5(W) inches. Readable markings of "DA", "CCC", star and, rhombus. On September 6, 1622, the heavily laden treasure galleon of King Philip IV's Tierra Firme Fleet sank in a raging hurricane near the Florida Keys. The cargo was lost at sea until July 20, 1985 and found by Treasure Salvors Inc. Over 1000 silver bars were listed on the ships manifest. Many of the silver bars on board were mined and processed in Upper Peru (Modern Bolivia). Each ingot was poured into a mold and then struck with the serial number (A), which would be listed on the ships manifest. The assayer would then remove his "bite" (B) to attest to the purity of the silver. Once the purity was established, the ingot was struck with the "Ley" or fineness number, 2400 being the purest. Each bar, other than the Royal Quinto was subject to 20% tax and struck with the tax seal "D". Designs on the ingot indicate the owner or shipper. There are various other marks of unknown origin made by various handlers or shippers of the ingot. Some of the bars are dated with the year. This ingot was certified on 9/15/1986. Local pickup only or buyer arranged shipping is heavily suggested. This lot has a reserve.
