Description:

Original 1870-1880 oil on canvas naval battle painting illustrating the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac on March 9th 1862 in ornate gold gilded frame. Work depicts both the burning of the U.S.S Congress and the U.S.S Minnesota as well as the Monitor and Merrimac engaging in battle. Originally purchased from Naval Officers dining hall at a New England base in Massachusetts. Painting features no artist signature, but was executed by an experienced hand. Piece comes with C.O.A. from American Heritage Investments along with certification of its provenance dated August 2002. Frame measures 34 by 43 inches, canvas measures 22.5 by 34.5 inches. Overall in very good condition.
